What the Tech: Building a Flat
Ever looked at the set or lights, costumes or sound in a show and thought “How in the TECH?!”
Allen Dean, master carpenter of Stage West Theatre, will be showing you how to build a theatrical or stage flat. This is a simple, easy-to-follow guide for tech beginners who want to build a miniature, scaled-down flat at home.
At Stage West, we use and reuse our flats over and over again for our productions. Flats are used in the background as painted scenery, buildings, or pieces of the show. Please note that we generally make our flats 4x8 feet, but the flat we'll be making in this video is 2x4 feet.
We'll take you step-by-step, from cutting pieces to the right size to assembly. Remember to practice shop safety when dealing with tools.
